No Business Like SNOW Business

What can I say about this one. Fun, challenging and rewarding are three quick words that pop to my mind.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I have to say that outstanding "TEAM WORK" made this one happen. From headline and story by MaryBeth Matzek at Insight (I hear her daughter had something to do with the headline as well), to Dave Allen supplying the parka (purchased in Montreal, Canada) to Jeff, Michael and myself supplying creative ideas (Michael gets full credit for the snow globe idea), we are all a part of this creation. Credit goes to Jeff and Michael for creating the layout and design as well as Rob Resnick for helping me implement my vision in post. I hope I didn't miss anybody! Special props go to Dan Ariens for being such a good sport, despite hitting the pillow at 3am the night before after a long flight home from Burma. Thanks everyone!

Often times, February gets a bum wrap, but with Valentine's Day, my birthday and now this cover story, I think this month is going to be pretty COOOOOOL.

What It Takes

I was recently on a product shoot for a large medical company photographing a brand new product for a brochure that required SEXY lighting. Often times, I don't think people realize what goes into photographing the things they see in magazines and in this case brochures. So, I thought I would give you a glimpse into the world of what it takes to make something look fabulous.
For this particular assignment it took 15 lights, 11 power packs, 14 extension cords, 27 stands, 5 sheets of plexiglass, 5 mirrors, multiple flags and cutters, 4 exposures with one camera and a mono stand.
Now I can't show the actual product, but I thought it was very interesting and a bit crazy when it was all done to see what it took to make this one shot.

My Directorial Debut

Here it is, as promised. The Community Foundation's "Your Life. Your Legacy." video debuted last Tuesday night to a packed house at the 25th Anniversary Donor and Volunteer Event. It is the first video that I ever directed so go easy on me.

It was a real privilege for me to help create this video for such a great cause and equally great people who receive this money as well as those who make it all happen. I'd like to thank everybody at C. F. along with everybody involved in the process of making this video. YOU HAVE NO IDEA what and how many people it takes to create such a piece. I know it's relative, but WOW! I am blessed to work with such talented, kind, hilarious and hard working people. I hope you enjoy watching the video as much as I did helping create it.

God I love test shots. Everybody seems to ham it up when the camera is on "practice mode". Too often I just delete them to clear space on a card or thinking too hard about what's about to come. Well no more. I am on a quest to keep these special moments, and share them with you. At least I say that now. I have good intentions anyway.

   WOW what a month! My world of Photography included architectural interiors, on/off figure fashion, magazine cover stories, delicious food photography, yoga, group shots, a slew of 7 year old kids, furniture, creative portraiture, helping the community and DIRECTING my first video!!! What a rush!

   As much as I would LOVE to tell you about it, in this case I mean the video, I have to wait until it is ready to launch. However, I will do my best in the next few weeks/months to feed you with clips from what was an incredibly gratifying and rewarding experience.

The Dueling Divas at The Trout Museum of Art

Diva... A word that has been used to death since the late 90's. Sadly used more often to represent Omarosa and reality TV. When the REALITY of it is Diva initially defines a famous female opera singer. Translation: HEAD CHICK IN CHARGE.
   Well, a few weeks ago I went to check out The Dueling Divas act performed by Fresco Opera Theatre, and of course, brought a camera.
   They let me back stage too. What a great bunch of people. Man can they belt it out!!

As you may or may not know, the Appleton Art Center has had a make over. Aside from some beautiful cosmetic changes, the name has also changed. It is now The Trout Museum of Art. Check it out.

More often than not, it's that ONE image we are going for. Change this, move that... perfect! Shoot it. However, sometimes there are just too many great frames from one shoot and it doesn't seem fair to settle for just one. But how do you show them all? Here is a solution.

BTW, this was shot about three years ago. I just decided to show it today. Graham is the star of this photo. You may have seen him grabbing a cup of coffee downtown. Say hi to him. He's a good guy, and very photogenic.

Ahhhhh UTOPIA, a place where the print industry is alive and thriving. That's how I said it last year and I see no reason to change it.
Once again, I had the pleasure of covering the U360 Competition this year held in Chicago. Being the type to occasionally enter a contest myself, it is really interesting to be a bystander in a room with tables full of incredible work and see how they get whittled down to the finalists. Tough crowd too. Some beautiful work never saw the light of day.

If you are into diner food, you have to check this place out. They have been around since the 20's and it taste like it. You are greeted with homemade doughnuts fresh from the fryer and everything on the menu is made from scratch. It truly rocks.

A Day at the Farm

Most of you reading this blog already know a bit about me, and that I'm no stranger when it comes to photographing kids. Most of the time it's for a specific reason, ie: a kid drinking a glass of Quik, a baby in diapers or a little tike indulging in a triple scoop of ice cream. What you DON'T usually see, are the many families and children that I shoot throughout the year, just for the fun of it. It's an opportune time for me to just sort of, stand back and let things happen on their own, while I capture the moments that happen naturally. It's a time when I am able to take photographs without thinking about a specific "vision".

The shoot was with 3 brothers, 2 dogs, and a few horses. Normally, I wouldn't show these photographs, but, like the family I recently photographed, I also grew up with two brothers... out in the country.... surrounded by farms, dogs, horses, and tree forts. And, for some reason, I just felt like showing a few of the photos I took of them this past fall. I guess it sort of felt like looking at my own family photo album. Except I had a sister too(I didn't forget about you sis).
There were plenty of precious moments - those "magical" moments that just happen completely on their own, without direction or decree. I think I ended up processing out nearly 200 images. However, I will spare you some time and show you just a few of those moments.

The Grape Crusher

The bronze "Grapecrusher" statue of Napa Valley was created by sculptor Gino Miles. The statue is dedicated to the workers who labor in the vineyards. It weighs 6,000 pounds and stands 6 feet tall.

I grabbed this shot on my way in to the valley for a conference. Good timing.

Kids nowadays; what are they thinking?? I'm sure you've heard that question before. Well, just a couple of weeks ago, I found out what these kids nowadays ARE thinking.

Recently, I did a photo shoot involving MANY kids, from mere tots in grade school all the way up to text-savvy high school students (OMG! LOL!). I know how kids nowadays have a severely short attention span (and patience), so in order to help pass the time for the grade schoolers and make it less like torture for the OMG'ers , each student was given a notebook and a pencil. I then told them to write their hopes and dreams or draw a picture or whatever they wanted to jot down. Basically, ANYTHING to keep them pre-occupied while I took their photo!

Not that there aren't many, but one great thing about being a Photographer are the opportunities that can come from being one. Yesterday, I was given the chance to enter a CLEAN ROOM for a photo project. The client asked me if I would be ok with putting on a full body suit to go in. I laughed... Are you kidding me? I almost had one leg in it mid sentence. I love being able to go where most cannot.

I sort of felt like an umpa lumpa, except without the green hair and orange skin. Oh, and not as short. Oh, and not as much candy to be had. I did have gum in my pocket.

I love this job!

OK, I'm not usually one to toot my own horn... at least I don't think I am?

However, today I am very excited. You may remember my blog post "I Executed Matt's Baby".

It explains the SPARK project that Matt and I worked on last year. It was AWESOME for Matt to win Peoples' Choice at the Addys for that project. It is always rewarding to see a client win an award for something they hired you to help them with. That's really what it's all about. Be that as it may, I took a photo from that series and entered it in the 5th Annual Spider Awards, an international black and white photo contest. And guess what...

UTOPIA

Ahhhh UTOPIA- a place where the print industry is alive and thriving. Last Thursday I had the pleasure of photographing the U360 Competition.

Not only did I get to stay at the American Club in Kohler, WI (very nice) but more importantly, I got to meet and photograph some amazing designers (very cool).

It was interesting to be able to witness the judging process. 100s of print pieces lay across yards and yards or neatly linen covered tables. All waiting to be selected to move on to the next round or be left to serve those in which it was made and nothing further. I couldn't help but think about the process that goes through my head when choosing images for the Addys and why one thing wins over another. With that thought playing in my head and watching the judges deliberate over the entries, some answers were revealed, sort of. Now I can't tell you much about what was selected, but I can tell you that I was surprised. Shocker right? Don't get me wrong, most of the pieces that were selected were awesome. You know, those pieces that you see that instantly make you wish you had a hand in it. But, on the other hand, there were a couple pieces that still boggle my mind. The best way for me to describe it is "simple", and some times simple is what it takes.

We are introducing U360—a new competition for 2010 that is the next generation of U B the Judge. U360 is a celebration of the role print plays in today’s marketing mix. U360 will embrace excellence in communication, design, and execution of projects. '360' reflects that the judging will take on a more holistic or 'all around' assessment of the project - from concept and writing, imagery and design, and finally quality of print and bindery execution.

Our new competition will move from an event-based, peer judging platform to review by a North American panel of creative, communication, and print professionals. Winners will be included in a showbook distributed throughout North America, the Utopia website, and in press releases. An exhibit of the winning entries will be available for local market events through your Utopia sales representative (based on availability).

What one set of eyes sees can be quite different from what another set of eyes sees. That's one of the amazing and fun things about photography; your image can mean a million different things, to a million different people, yet still retain the core value of what the photo is all about! It's not just a photo; it's art!

The real MEAT of it!

For the past 2 months, I have anticipated writing this post, but first, the images had to be printed. Now that they are printed, I am able to release them to you, and tell you all about the shoot. Alas! They say that patience is a virtue, and I guess it’s really true!

The images were used for the July issue of INSIGHT MAGAZINE. The subject was Mark Skogen. The idea for the inside spread was mine. The cover concept came from myself, Michael Miller and Jeff Amstutz of A2Z Design. The catalyst was Margaret LeBrun, editor and chief of Insight Magazine. The team work needed to execute this entire project is what I want to talk about.

Quite often, I hear the 5 words, "It's all about you, Shane". However, this couldn't be further from the truth. Without the help of so many others, this shoot would have never gone as smoothly as it did. Scott Ehlers, normally playing the role of photographer and all around nice guy, took the time to help make the table. This table is where all of the oranges sat, allowing Mark’s head to easily slide into place and become the “head fruit”, amongst the oodles of oranges. Bill K., normally the studio manager, played the role of my right hand man; taking care of setting me up, tearing me down, making sure everything ran smoothly and safely, and running cameras and files to perfection. Julie Gardner played the role of stylist; taking care of spreading out all the oranges, finding the perfect apple, making sure the meat counter was up to spec. and taking care of Mark’s make-up and overall comfort. Rob Resnick, executing all of my wishes on flawless post production to deliver another top notch product to our client. Not to mention, Donna and Carla taking care of all the scheduling and misc. logistics.

To you all...THANK YOU! Without a great team, great things may never come to be.

Everybody loves my work; only having to do it 3 months out of the year, while making enough money in those 3 months to kick it with Koko somewhere beautiful the other 9, would be perfect! I don't need much.

Bodhi from Point Break. "Ain't it wild? That's what makes it so interesting. You can do what you want, and make up your own rules. Why be a servant to the law, when you can be it's master."

The many that do incredibly great deeds that go unnoticed. Altruistic people are what keeps the world a beautiful place.

What is your most treasured thing?

This was the only question that bugged me. The word “thing” is defined as: “a material object without life or consciousness; an inanimate object.” Things shouldn’t be treasured; people should. But, since this IS a questionnaire, and this IS my blog, here is my answer: My wedding ring would be first and my Stephen Webster ring is a close second. Everybody probably thought I would say my car.

I like to think that my favorite things are a reflection of my personality. These sometimes unspoken interests, so critical to piecing together the puzzle of who you are, yet some of them remain a mystery to even the closest of friends. There are things about you that people don't know simply because you didn't think of mentioning it. There are things about you that are better kept to yourself (you know what I'm talkin' about). My Favorite things lay somewhere in between.

Stephen Webster - The Glamorous Life

It's that time again; Time to shoot the National Trade Ads for Jewelers Mutual. With that on the front burner, I reflect on last year when I flew to NYC to photograph Stephen Webster. Stephen is a jewelry designer from London, who's jewelry is sought after by such stars as Madonna, Sienna Miller, Elton John and Christina Aguilera. Upon first meeting him, I was a bit awe struck; this was a man who resembled Keith Richards, creates kick ass hardcore rocker jewelry, hob nobs with the rich & famous, and trekked cross country in a '59 T-bird. And as if this wasn't enough, he blogged these trekking adventures thru and traveled with a mummy puppet that had an uncanny resemblance to none other than....himself.

Anyway, this is how it went down:

We were scheduled to photograph Stephen in the early afternoon, squeezing in between his In Style magazine shoot and an E! Entertainment interview. But the plane was late, and we missed our window. Onto Plan B - a night shoot. (Always have a Plan B) We land @ 5:45pm, grab the gear in baggage claim, call the assistant and tell him to sit tight; we were on our way. We jump into a cab and speed off to the SoHo House in Manhattan. Traffic is a nightmare (imagine Main St. on anabolic steroids) and we need to have our shots by 7:30pm because Stephen has dinner plans. We finally arrive @ 6:30pm. We jump out of the cab, shake hands with the assistant, and, in the time it takes to roll into the lobby and climb 3 floors in the elevator, explain to him the importance of how we need to make this happen in little time.

In this blog entry, there is really no way I can explain the feeling I had, anticipating what was going to happen in the next 60 minutes, unless I were to write a small novel. So, I'll make it easier for all of us, and skip to the end. Stephen was awesome. Super style, super chill and a slam dunk when it comes to being a photographer's dream. What IS a photographer's dream, you ask? Great hair, incredible style, a relaxed disposition, and excellent music playing in the background. Mix these altogether and you have the perfect atmosphere for the shoot. Although I only spent about 30 brief minutes with Mr. Stephen Webster, it is definitely a shoot I will never forget.

The "Incredible" Billboard

THE PROJECT: Design a billboard for Pioneer Credit Union based on these 3 words: "Monster Savings Rates".

THE MISSION:

To find a muscular guy who can be transformed into a Hulk doppleganger.

THE GOAL: To create a MEAN, GREEN, BANG-UP billboard!

More and more, jobs that require original photography are dwindling. Stock photography seems to have become more often than not, a big greasy fat guy in the corner of the room who gets the bigger piece of the pie simply because he's there. He's easy, and with a little finagling, can be whipped into shape to make do (no obvious bitterness there). Thankfully, there are those who strive to deliver originality to their clients; something unique and specific. Jim Rivett and Laura Treichel at Arketype were the creative master minds behind this project. And let me tell you that this project for PCU is just that type of unique distinctiveness that gets my juices flowing.

Scouting for the perfect model to help create a theme that grabs people's attention is critical for any project. Trying to find an uber muscular man who can mimic the tenacity of the Incredible Hulk in midwest Wisconsin is no easy task. Executing it in a way that satisfies the needs of the client and justifies the intention to go with something original, is magic. Effortlessly producing something that jumps off the page, stops you dead in your tracks and makes the statement that was intended, in what photography

is all about. And, when it's all said and done, if the opportunity presents itself, I like to give it that little extra to show my appreciation to the client with my own creative vision. Thus having exemplified the fact that they have truly inspired me as well.

Recently I was able to attend "Rick's 13th International Tattoo Convention" at Oneida Casino in Green Bay. The convention brought tattoo/piercing artists from around the world, including the United States, France, Japan and Australia. It was a huge melting pot of ink and metal; from tattoos, to piercings to dreadlocks to giant coasters stuffed into earlobes! I never felt so "normal" in my life! In fact, it all reminded me of one of those old "B" movies; something like "Tattooed Robo-Zombie Bikers Attack!" It was quite a compelling crowd, and it almost felt as if I had been transported to another planet. There was one person in particular who remains burnt into my memory; he was a bigger fella, and if I had to guess, I'd say he was in his late 40's/early 50's. He was laying on his back, and I could tell he was getting something done to his face. I noticed his ears were covered in piercings as I moved in for a closer look. He was the picture of calmness; arms resting neatly across his chest, eyes closed. As I looked up towards his face, I saw the modus operandi - he was getting his eyebrows pierced. Barbell after barbell after barbell after barbell were being impaled thru his skin until his eyebrows were completely lined with the metal earrings. What I initially thought was red ink on his eyebrows, was actually blood. Suddenly I felt like I had been thrust into a horror movie, like "Hellraiser" or "Silence of the Lambs". And to think - my eyes water when I stub my toe! All in all, the convention was quite stimulating, and the people were very interesting. I think I got my fill of needles for the next decade.

This is pretty much how it went down when I posted the images from the Spark project on my Facebook page. The response was great, but the questions were too much. So... I decided to break it down to "I executed Matt's baby". Maybe not the best way to sum it up, but it worked for the time. Perhaps now I should explain it a bit better.

Matt Bellisle and I have worked on numerous projects together over the years, but none quite like the image piece we executed for Spark Advertising last summer. Five incredible ideas, created by Matt, with a lot of tweaks and twiddles between the two of us to come up with something really special. With the help of Image Studios's own Julie Gardner (stylist extraordinaire), a few power tools and some incredibly open minded models, we were able to make the imaginable, reality.

In order to grasp the whole experience of this project, checking it out first hand would be your best bet.

Remedy White

If any of you missed last Saturday night's opening for Remedy White, the areas' premier collection of Lowbrow and Pop Surrealist art, I strongly recommend taking a trip to 301 Main St. De Pere to check it out. They have a great space with even better work. The vibe at the opening was electric; lots of familiar faces, great music, plenty of food and drink and creativity flowing from every corner of the room.

Tamara McLean is the Gallery Director as well as one of the artists in the show. Along with Robb Mommaerts (as seen in the photo), and a rich kaleidoscope of other artists, ranging from photography to painting to incredible mixtures of computer graphics, it really is a super show. It truly is refreshing to see something so contemporary, right here in our own backyard.

Found Faces

Some of you may already have heard about the quest I am on which I call "FOUND FACES". The story goes... Found Faces is a collection of naturally occurring "faces" in the environment around us. It was in 2003 when the first face "found" me, and they've been revealing themselves to me ever since. The faces, all naturally occurring and not manipulated for the camera represent a wide range of personalities and emotions from worried to happy.

My true goal for this project was to make kids aware of all the fun faces hidden within our surroundings. To stop and really look, and to see deeper than what's just on the surface. Throughout this journey, I've found that this project can speak to the child in all of us. Since this quest began, many e-mails have been sent my way from numerous people who have also taken photos of their own found faces and shared them with me. These actions are exactly what the project embodies.

Found Faces is a project for the masses. Now go find YOUR faces! =)
